Lingering pollution menace, ozone, gets renewed scrutiny

China's top environmental watchdog has vowed to take more steps to help reduce ozone pollution, as ground-level ozone is the only one of six major pollutants that is rising in China. Ozone experienced a rise in density in the country's 338 major cities in 2018. The concentration averaged 151 micrograms per cubic meter last year, up by 1.3 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

 

Yangtze drinking water violations vastly rectified

Inspectors discovered 6,251 violations during two rounds of inspections involving 1,586 bodies of water in the 11 provinces and municipalities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt and many more around China. Li Ganjie, minister of ecology and environment, said 95 percent of the 1,009 discolored and foul-smelling water bodies environmental officers found in 36 key cities have been cleaned.

 

China's pollution control meets 2018 targets

Air quality has continued to improve with 338 major cities reporting good air quality on 79.3 percent of days. In terms of soil pollution control, China reduced solid waste imports by 46.5 percent year on year, finished overhauls of all subpar garbage power plants and launch sweeping crackdown on the illegal transportation and dumping of hazardous waste in 2018.

 

Nation to step up fight on air pollution

China's top environmental watchdog has vowed to succeed in air pollution control this year by enhancing the management of diesel-powered trucks while further reducing industrial emissions. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment will continue this year to implement the 2018-20 air pollution control plan, which aims to control bulk coal consumption, poorly managed polluting enterprises and industrial boilers, and minimize the emissions of the steel industry.

JD stresses sustainability in e-commerce development

To cut down on waste in the delivery process, JD's customers can return their boxes for reuse and recycling with the help of the company's partner retailers and delivery companies. Besides that, the company wastes less by introducing reusable boxes made from biodegradable materials, reducing tape thickness to seal boxes, and going digital for documents. JD has also converted over 5,000 of its delivery vehicles to new energy.

 

Chinese enterprises should improve their environmental information: Report

Enterprises in China did not perform well in environmental information disclosure in 2017, but they made "a little" progress compared with the previous year, said an evaluation report released by Beijing University of Chemical Technology. The report said that 85 percent of the companies evaluated got scores of less than 50. A full score is 100. Liu Qingsong, deputy secretary-general of the China Forum of Environmental Journalists, said that the report aimed to improve enterprises' awareness of protecting the environment and encouraging them to publicize their environmental information.

Guiyang awarded for ecological development

Southwest China's Guiyang was among the entrants of the first group in the 2018 Ecological Civilization Model City list. Guiyang boasts a forest coverage rate of 48.66 percent, and the green coverage rate of its developed area is 41.13 percent. The water quality in its centralized drinking water sources fully reaches national standards, and the excellent rate of its air quality is above 95 percent. Guiyang has developed about 600 ecological civilization units and over 200 ecological towns/villages.

 

Tibet nomads give support to relocation plan

Ecological protection efforts in the Tibet autonomous region have presented nomadic herdsmen with a challenge: what to do when Tibetan wild donkeys are competing for sparse pasture with domesticated yaks. It's an issue nomads in the region's highest and least-populated county, Tsonyi, have had to grapple with recently, with relocation being part of the solution. It's also a testament to the regional government's efforts and achievements in protecting the environment and wild animals.
