Pollution

Districts fail inspections

Environmental problems including improper garbage disposal, as well as air and river  pollution, have been uncovered by inspectors in the districts of Huangpu, Minhang and Songjiang. Residents made 511 complaints and tip offs. More than 340 companies and  the responsible personnel have been punished, a total of 49.1 million yuan (US$7 million) in fines has been collected, and three enterprises were ordered to be shut down.

Team to inspect city's waterways

The central government is sending a team to Shanghai to examine the quality of the city’s waterways. During its inspection from October 22 to November 2, the team, organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, will take tip-offs and suggestions by phone or on WeChat.

City projects listed as green construction models

The Shanghai Tower in Pudong and the G60 Science & Technology Innovation Valley road show center in Songjiang, for instance, have widely used wind, thermal and solar power as well as intelligent illumination, rain collection and other energy-saving technologies. Shanghai has also been carrying out urban renewal, prefabricated construction, polluted water treatment, ecological and soil remediation as well as sponge city constructions.

McDonald's going green with 1,800 new outlets

McDonald’s has been upgrading existing outlets and optimizing its energy management systems, including the use of LED energy-saving lamps and more efficient air-conditioning and kitchen equipment. Other initiatives include cutting down on packaging and plastic straws. Adopting LEED certification standards will expedite these processes.

Improvement in 'speed, safety, comfort, intelligence' of mobility

To solve increasingly environmental problems, Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang announced the “defending blue skies” policy to speed up air pollution controls. At the same time, the Chinese government is supporting the development of new energy vehicles. Continental is investing heavily in new technologies to meet the increasingly strict China's National VI emission standard A and B for light-duty vehicles, providing flexible electrification solutions to make the air cleaner.

Taking the global lead in pushing green design

Greenbuild is the world’s largest conference and expo dedicated to green buildings and sustainable environment. The two-day conference, held in China for the second time, has attracted more than 600 participants from around the world. More than 1,600 green building projects have been certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design so far in China. This includes more than 1,300 LEED certified projects spanning over 50 million square meters on the Chinese mainland.

Ecology

Dolphins seen in nearby waters of world's longest cross-sea bridge

The 55-km Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge that opened on Tuesday is the world's longest cross-sea bridge, connecting the mainland province of Guangdong with the country's two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau. During the nine-year bridge construction period, researchers have identified and registered a total of 2,367 dolphins, with no injuries of any dolphins reported.

China vows to further protect environment while fighting poverty

Environmental and ecological protection will play a bigger role in advancing poverty alleviation. Emphasis will be placed on developing the ecological economy, particularly ecological tourism and agriculture, healthcare and elderly care, the organic food industry as well as the ecology recovery industry. To improve the livelihoods of those living under the national poverty line and to provide better infrastructure for countryside tourism, green heating systems will be introduced and water quality enhanced.
