China's Zhejiang Province Wins UN's Highest Environmental Honor

Zhejiang's Green Rural Revival Program won the award for "Inspiration and Action" for its work cleaning up once-heavily polluted rivers and streams in the province. "This exceptionally successful eco-restoration program shows the transformative power of economic and environmental development together," according to the website of the UN Environment Program.

Green Belt

Measures to be undertaken include promoting green development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt in a coordinated and balanced way and protecting its ecological environment. Joint prevention and control of pollution and comprehensive management of the environment will be strengthened, promoting water pollution treatment, repair of the aquatic ecology and protection of aquatic resources

Fishing for Success

The Zhili Government has worked hard to resolve other water-related issues. By 2014, the town had cleaned up all polluted rivers in the area. Two years later all poultry farms came under regulation for pollution control, and this year the town has begun environmental governance in the aquaculture industry.

Off to a Good Start

China's restructuring efforts are paying off, with the economic structure significantly improved. The service sector is taking the lead as the country makes headway in steering its economy toward high-quality growth and away from inefficient investment, low-end exports and polluting factories.

Green Commitment

With fewer smoggy days and more blue skies, the winter of 2017-18 in Beijing and the neighboring areas of Tianjin and Hebei Province was regarded as heralding in the initial success of the battle against air pollution in China. Yet the government isn’t prepared to slow down yet, as evidenced by its most recent action plan which encompasses a bigger vision.

Energy

Clean Heating

To tackle the problems of air pollution and global warming, China has vowed to increase the proportion of non-fossil fuels in its primary energy consumption to 20 percent by 2030, while ensuring that carbon emissions peak around the same time. Curbing coal consumption and increasing the use of non-fossil sources of energy are seen as two critical measures necessary for China to build a clean and low-carbon energy system in the coming years.

Green Waterway

Environmentally friendly regulation of the shipping industry boosts the prospects of the region along the Yangtze River. Environmental improvements and proposals include an emission-reducing shore power system, regulation of shipping activities to minimize wasted fuel during wait time, and retirement of ships that do not meet fuel efficiency and pollution standards.

Ecology

The Man Who Loves a Lake

Today, the Yundang Lagoon’s waters have been cleaned to meet one of the highest national standards, nearly 2 km of mangrove forests have been grown along its banks, and fishes have returned to the clean waters. Besides the egret, Xiamen’s signature bird, there are nearly 70 other species in the forest, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. The ecological restoration has been acknowledged as a model restoration work by the United Nations Development Programme.
