China names and shames 158 companies for pollution

Nearly half of the polluters were urban sewage treatment plants, and others included heat suppliers, coal chemical processing firms, and printing and dyeing companies. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment has demanded local authorities thoroughly investigate the 26 most severe and persistent polluters, rectify their wrongdoings, and publicize the progress.

China int'l industry fair opens in Shanghai

The 20th China International Industry Fair opened Wednesday in Shanghai, with over 2,600 companies participating in the “innovation, intelligence, and green”-themed five-day event. Eight professional exhibition sectors have been set up to cover major industrial areas including robots, new energy, industrial Internet, and energy-saving and environmental protection technology.

World Cleanup Day: Saving the planet through garbage marathon

To celebrate the 10th World Cleanup Day on September 15, 700 NGOs and other groups tackled China’s waste crisis, mobilizing more than 1 million people. Across the world, the campaign attracted 13 million green advocates from 156 countries, according to Pick up China. In Shanghai, more than 4,000 locals joined in on Saturday.

New alliance to boost development of 'characteristic' towns

An alliance was established to promote the development of characteristic towns in the Yangtze River Delta region. It will enhance characteristic development of the towns in the delta so as to strengthen enforcement of the country’s strategies for rural revitalization, targeted poverty alleviation, industrial synergy and environmental governance.

Villagers raising prosperity through beauty

Rural villages on the outskirts of the city are taking innovative measures in a national campaign to bring new life and beauty to the countryside, while increasing the incomes and quality of life of their residents. Under the scheme, each household can receive about 90,000 yuan (US$13,000) per year by renting out their homesteads. About a third of the taxes the companies pay will be given to the villages to improve infrastructure and the environment.

China establishes first research institute for national parks

The institute will focus its research on issues including biodiversity conservation, bearing capacity of the ecological environment and sustainable use of biological resources. It aims to build a system for monitoring and assessing the environment and providing early warnings against potential ecological risks. It also plans to build a display platform powered by big data and cloud computing for scientific research and science popularization.

Smartest cities have smartest 'City Brains'

A pioneer of the smart city program is “Putuo City Brain.” The brain can detect fire hazards, test the quality of water and automatically generates alerts when danger is spotted. Soon, environmental protection, flood prevention, greening and construction will be connected into the system. Nearly 100,000 devices are installed in Putuo, collecting data around the clock.

China reports by West are in need of reality check

There has been insufficient appreciation of the fact that the air quality has been improving, or that sanctions on factories and building sites that break the law show China’s proactive approach. Indeed, China is rapidly becoming a pioneer of renewable energy and home to some of the world’s largest solar plants. Such a nuanced and intricate country deserves an equally nuanced and intricate coverage abroad.
