Something stinking in river chief program

Cleaning up the waterways of a megacity like Shanghai is no easy task, which is why central and city governments have poured money, talent and policy into the matter. Many of the city’s waterways are cleaner than they have been for decades, but elsewhere, failed water quality tests persist with some rivers as dark and smelly as ever. It was in this environment that 10 officials, among them district directors, were warned yesterday after the rivers they are in charge of failed the latest assessment.

The recycling and reproduction of precious metals will become more important in the future as the energy consumption and emission of carbon dioxide is lower than the exploitation of precious metals.

Ecology

Escape to the countryside, the good earth

Shanghai launched the “beautiful villages” campaign in 2014 and aims to have 100 “beautiful villages” by 2020, from 62 now. There are about 1,700 villages in Shanghai. In general, “beautiful villages” should be “livable (environment), efficient (agriculture), lovely (life) and harmonious (human relationships).” Priority will be given to preserving idyllic landscapes and historical heritage in the course of modern agricultural and tourist development.
