Polluted channel traced to materials firm

A foreign-funded materials company in Songjiang District is under police investigation for alleged illegal discharging of pollutants, causing damage to surrounding farmlands. Songjiang’s environmental protection authority received complaints from residents of Shihudang Town last week that water in an irrigation channel in the town had turned yellow and was emitting a noxious oily smell.

China's air quality improves: top legislature inspection report

The average density of PM10 in 338 Chinese cities at prefecture level and above in 2017 decreased by 22.7 percent compared to 2013 levels, while the average density of PM2.5 in major areas including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, fell 39.6 percent, 34.3 percent and 27.7 percent respectively.

Green Commitment

The 200 inspection teams spotted a total of 2,690 cases involving air pollution control law violations, including failed attempts by local authorities to shut down or upgrade high-emission enterprises and cases of enterprises discharging industrial dust into the air without proper treatment. Other problems included factories failing to install or operate pollution-control facilities and construction sites or open mine pits failing to take proper measures to reduce emissions

Tesla's Shanghai plant to roll out 500,000 vehicles

“Shanghai welcomes Tesla to put its entire industry chain of research and development, manufacturing and sales of electric car in the city,” Shanghai mayor Ying Yong said. “The government will fully support the construction of Tesla’s factory, and create a better business environment and provide better services for all types of enterprises, including Tesla.”

Xi sends congratulatory letter to ecological forum

"China highly values ecological and environmental protection," the president said. "Tthe country advocates harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and sticks to the path of green and sustainable development.... China is ready to work with the international community to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and build a clean, beautiful world."

Fighting Pollution

A guideline to enhance ecological and environmental protection and win the battle against the pollution of air, water and soil was released by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council on June 24, specifying targets that China expects to achieve by 2020 and beyond.

Clicking off poverty

Lhobsang Kandrol, professor with the Tibetology Institute at the Minzu University of China, said, "Tibet's tourism development depends on its natural, cultural and religious resources. Therefore, protecting these resources is the prerequisite for Tibet's long-term tourism development." Tibet's thriving Internet-driven tourism is good for its cultural and environmental protection.

Social Responsibility Matters

“When Chibwe Hydropower Station in Myanmar launched a feasibility study around a decade ago, there was still no local norm for ecological and environmental protection. However, we introduced high Chinese standards to the project in order to protect local biological diversity,” said Huang Guofang, Vice General Manager of the Department of International Business of the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC).

Heavy penalty for plastics

Mumbai in India has rolled out a stern ban to clean up its beaches and streets scarred by plastic trash. Businesses and residents found using disposable plastic bags or cups could face penalties of 5,000 rupees (US$73) for a first-time offence. To enforce the ban, the local government dispatched 250 officials to inspect shops and restaurants across the city.

"Different types of sensors are placed in possible pollution sources like industrial parks and construction sites. Once the concentration of discharged pollutants is beyond the accepted limits, environmental supervisors are informed and provided with data, videos and solutions." said Huang Song, who works for a company that provides such services.
